few words about the despyschiatrisation of trans people in France.
The situation and debates between associations is very confused. These are the stakes we identify (LGBTI commission of NPA) :
- the decision is very symbolic : in the ministry of Health list, trans people (who want to access homones and operation) are no longer followed for psychiatric disorder, but in another medical category ("rare illness"). Strictly, this is a change of category. We can say that it's a consequence of many years of activism. The trans activists are very divided and it's not easy to understand who ask what, and where. Many discussions take place in the Health ministry, but we have very few clear and public informations.
- this change of category should not question the reimbursement of care : there is a controversy between activists, but it seems that for Health Ministry it's not in question. However, we must be very careful, because it happens in a very strong context of austerity in France.
- many problems remain :
1) trans people always have to be followed by a few transphobic medical teams, which decides who can be trans or not.
2) to access a new gender on identity card and other papers, you must be sterilized
3) Transphobia is still unrecognize as a discrimination in France. Nothing has been said about that.
To conclude : after this symbolic decision, we need a strong mobilization to clarify certain question and to win new rights. I send you the official decision of LGBTI commission (in french) and a text from H Hazera, which explains some stakes (in french...) :
